Book review April

This month we read a book called Doom Rider. It is about a boy named Seth who becomes one of the horsemen of the apocalypse.

We thought the book was extremely disappointing because there was little to no description regarding the characters and scenery. We also think the writer could have spent more time building his characters and adding back story.

There were, in our opinion, too many main plot points therefore none of them were expanded on fully. Perhaps the author intended to have action flowing through the book to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. We think that this was a failed attempt and only decreased the quality of the story.

We compared it to previously read books in the YA genre such as: Wolf Brother (Michelle Paver) and Phoenix (S.F. Said).

All three novels revolved around pre teen males who saved their world from certain destruction. In addition to this, all three main characters had female companions around the same age as themselves. Despite these similarities there are also differences. For example: in Doom Rider the mainĀ  character (Seth) does not have a very pleasant personality whereas Torak and Lucky, the main characters in the compared stories, were very likeable.

In summary we thought that David Gatwood’s story fell short in a number of different categories.
